Røldal Freeride Challenge

2007 was the seventh running of the Røldal Freeride Challenge - see the review here.
The competitors start by jumping off the cliff at the top middle of the picture on your right, and find the most dangerous (or should that read "stylish") way down to the crowd at the bottom without killing themselves

about 400 metres straight down

a small shortcut down High above the ski centre at Røldal is normally a quiet and peaceful place, but for one weekend a year all that changes - with music, a helicopter, hundreds of skiing or boarding spectators and some of the most skillful freeriders flying down an incredibly steep mountain side.
This is not a sport for beginners. Pre-qualifying is open to anyone (the day before the main event), but it takes skill and experience - as well as courage - to plan your route down.

When : Wednesday 14 - Sunday 18th April 2010
Where : Røldal skisenter
Website : http://roldalfreeride.no/

The freeriders are both men and women, and from scandinavia - especially Norway - plus visitors from Austria, Germany, the USA and Australia

Distance from Stavanger: 180 km (plus 1 ferry)
Distance from Haugesund: 135 km

touchdown - and continue straight down
inflatable mammoths love this kind of thing Park at Røldal skisenter, take the chairlift to to top, then either walk up or take the highest T-bar lift and traverse across to the challenge site.

Kids Verdict:
This is not really something for younger children to enjoy - it is not easy getting up, they may not then want to just sit and watch, and you might not want to give them crazy ideas.
