The Haugesund area includes the coastal islands of Karmoy (to the south) and Stord (to the north). Karmoy has viking sites - and Haugesund's airport. Stord is a busy area of little shipyards at the mouth of the Hardangerfjord. Haugesund has viking roots but grew in the nineteenth century from the herring fish trade and shipbuilding.
