Skiing near Haugesund Norway

There is not normally usable snow in Haugesund, but there are many downhill resorts and cross-country ski areas within reach - Sauda is less than 2 hours away by car.
Røldal - is 2 hours or so away by car.
Many people going further afield drive to Hovden in Setesdal, or to Geilo or Hemsedal in Buskerud, further north, through Hardanger. Other options include Rauland and other resorts in Telemark (beyond Hovden)

Getting here:

You can fly to Haugesund from Oslo and especially from London Stansted with Ryanair. You can also arrive by ferry with a car if you want - but not currently (March 2010).
There are several hotels in the Haugesund area - not so many close to the ski resorts.

Sauda is east of Haugesund, about 1.5 hours or so by car. This growing centre has hyttes for rent, as well as some hotel accommodation.

Roldal is a hidden gem with great snow and a long season - but can also be quite exposed. About 2 hours drive from Haugesund, and there is a ski-buss service at weekends
Some hyttes, and one hotel, plus hotels in Odda and further away into Hardanger.

Hovden is the main resort in Setesdal, in Aust Agder county, along E 134 then south on RV 13. About 4 hours drive away. Several hotels and apartment centres.

Geilo is a famous resort in Hallingdal, in Buskerud county, with quite a few hotels and hyttes for rent. About 4-5 hours drive from Haugesund. It is also on the Bergen to Oslo railway line.
The resort is split with slopes on both sides of the valley.

Hemsedal is a long way from Haugesund - 7 or 8 hours drive through Hardanger and over (or through) Hardangervidda - but is a fantastic resort with great skiing and a long season.
There is a wide range of hotels, apartments and hyttes to choose from.

Rauland - Telemark

Rauland is 4 hours by car along E 134 (though it once took 2 days!). A hotel, apartments and hyttes for rent, at 3 separate skisenters.
There are other ski senters in Telemark (like Rjukan - Gaustablikk, Vrådal and Lifjell) further away.

Voss resort

Voss is 3 hours or so (and a ferry) away, through Hardanger.
Several hotels in a lively town, with a cable car up from near the Bergen - Oslo railway station.

Voss Fjellandsby Myrkdalen

Myrkdalen is about 30 km north of Voss. It is a new resort that is growing fast
