Mountain and skiing areas
South-west norway is dominated by two vast mountain areas close to the coast - Hardangervidda, and the Sirdal-Setesdal-Telemark heiene. There are no roads through these areas and few roads around them. Winter does not play around here - some roads are closed by snow for half the year, making journeys longer and slower. The only way in or out of Lysebotn (past Pulpit Rock and Kjerag at the end of Lysefjord) during the winter is by boat. The ski resorts are busy from Christmas to Easter or beyond, then again with summer hikers. We cover the parts of this area by county (fylke) in greater detail.
